Bolinas Surf Lessons, the premiere surf school in the Bay Area, offers private and group lessons on the best beginner waves in Northern California.

Although we specialize in teaching adult beginner surfers, all ages and skill levels are welcome.

Our instructors are experienced surfers, trained in life-saving and CPR, and are life-long residents of the area. Many of our instructors grew up surfing in Bolinas and offer unparalleled local knowledge.

Students will learn basic surfing fundamentals, as well as ocean awareness, water safety, wave riding skills, and surf etiquette.

Equipment (4mm wetsuit, boots and soft longboard) is available for rent from the 2 Mile Surf Shop.

Lessons and Rates

Bolinas Surf Lessons offers both private and group lessons.

Weekend Group Class
Bolinas Surf Lessons offers Group Classes: Saturday, and Sunday for $65 per person with an equipment package and $40 per person for the lesson only. Classes last 1 1/2 hours. These classes are designed for beginner and first time surfers and will focus on surfing rules and etiquette and wave riding fundamentals.
Class size is kept small (3 to 6 people) to ensure students receive the personal attention they need to develop their surfing skills. Advance registration is recommended to attend Group Classes. Group Classes are offered year round. Group classes are typically offered in the mornings and surf equipment can be kept for the entire day.

Private Lessons
In a private lesson you will receive one on one instruction on the beach and in the water. Private Lessons are $105 with an equipment package and $80 for the lesson only. Private lessons last 1 1/2 hours. Lessons consist of 30 minutes of beach training and at least 1 hour of water time. Female instructors are available upon request. Private Lessons can be scheduled for any time, depending on availability and surf equipment can be kept for the entire day.

Private Group Lessons
Group Lessons can be arranged for 2 to 12 students. The cost ranges depending on group size and the equipment needed.
2-3 people are $75 per person with an equipment package and $50 for the lesson only.
4-6 people are $65 per person with an equipment package and $40 for the lesson only.
7-12 people are $60 per person with an equipment package and $35 for the lesson only.
Group of 8 and over will receive a second instructor for the lesson.
Private Group Lessons last 1 1/2 hours. Surfing is a great activity to learn with the encouragement of a group of friends. Like Private Lessons, Group Lessons can be scheduled for any time, depending on availability and surf equipment can be kept for the entire day.

Lesson Packages

Pro Package
In the Pro Package you will receive 1 Group Class and 4 Private Lessons for $420 with an equipment package and $320 for the lessons only.

Private Package
In the Private Package you will receive 3 Private lessons for $285 with an equipment package and $225 for the lessons only.

Standard Package
In the Standard Package you will receive 1 Group Class, 2 Private lessons for $245 with an equipment package and $185 for the lesson only.

Lesson Packages are specially designed for students interested in developing their surfing skills quickly and also make a great gift.

All Equipment is rented from the 2 Mile Surf Shop and will be reserved for your lesson. Rental equipment can be kept for the entire day. Equipment package includes: Foam board, 4/3mm wetsuit and booties.

Bolinas Surf Lessons accepts cash, check, Visa, and MasterCard.

Gift certificates are also available.

Scheduling a lesson

If you would like to schedule a lesson, please contact us at the 2 Mile Surf Shop by e-mail or phone. You may also contact Nick Kreiger, the program director, at 415 847 5489.

To reserve a lesson time we will need the approximate height, weight, and shoe size of all students (to fit you for a wetsuit and boots). We will also need a credit card number.

You can cancel a lesson 36 hours prior to its scheduled time with no penalty. However, you will be charged the full lesson cost if you cancel within 48 hours or do not show up for your lesson.

Availability for weekend lessons often becomes scarce towards the end of the week. Please contact us early!

Bolinas Surf Lessons only postpones lessons in the event of severe weather conditions such as heavy rain. If this situation arises, you will be contacted either the night before or morning of the lesson.

Bolinas Surf Lessons instructors reserve the right to cancel lessons at any time to ensure the safety of our students and others in the water.
