LOS
ANGELES, CABRILLO BEACH
|
|
"SoCal's Only "On the
Beach" Windsurfing Rentals
Visiting Los Angeles or San Diego for business
or pleasure? Want a little "quality time" shredding on
the Pacific Ocean during your stay? Captain Kirk’s is waiting
for you with the area’s only pre-rigged rental/demo fleet, RIGHT
ON THE BEACH!!
Cabrillo Beach is located on the southeastern
tip of the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula, 25 minutes from LAX
and 10 minutes from Long Beach. An anomaly in the urban wilderness
of LA, the feeling you get here is of wide open spaces, including
100 foot high cliffs and a beautiful view of Catalina Island. The
most consistently windy ocean beach within 200 miles, Cabrillo has
both open ocean conditions and flat water bay conditions on
opposite sides of the same beach, making it uniquely versatile for
windsurfers of all ability levels.

information on Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Windsurfing
launching areas.

Cabrillo Beach, Los Angeles,
California U.S.A
Also known as "Hurricane Gulch,"
Cabrillo’s geography combines a reliable thermal wind with a
venturi booster from 100 foot high cliffs just upwind of the
launch. The wind starts mellow in the morning and builds to 15 -
25 m.p.h. in the afternoon, 80% of the days between the months of
April to October. You can get to Cabrillo Beach as late as 4:30 PM
and still get in a great session, so get your obligations finished
early and come on down.
Cabrillo Beach Kiting Rules

No Kiting is
permitted at Cabrillo Beach on weekends from Memorial Day to
Labor Day weekend.

| Windsurfing Beginners
The harbor side of Cabrillo Beach resembles a
good sized lake with a nice sandy beach. The best launch is from
the area adjacent to the parking lot near the fishing pier and
breakwater. This launch provides very flat water and the company
of other beginning and beginner - intermediate sailors.

The wind is typically the strongest from 1 to
6 in the afternoon, so we recommend total beginners to be on the
water by 11 AM at the latest. If you are taking a lesson (which
we highly recommend) we have a 99% success rate at getting our
students sailing and having fun on their 1st day!! If you have a
friend to teach you, we can provide the right gear to give you
the next best chance for a successful 1st day!
Intermediate Windsurfers
Choose from either side of the breakwater
depending on the conditions of the day and your confidence
level. The harbor side is best for intermediates on days when
the wind is really cranking and/or the surf is big on the ocean
side. Hang out and watch the water for a few minutes and you
will get a good idea of the situation on any given day. Remember
that ocean waves are powerful and can damage your equipment, so
keep your rig out of the water and be aware if you go into the
surf.

Most days the wind is gusty on the outside
(ocean side) until you sail out a few hundred yards from the
beach where you hit "the blast zone," so named because
the wind picks up strongly. Be sure to keep your eyes on the
water upwind of you so that you can anticipate the increasing
wind and not get slammed ...
Advanced Windsurfers
The Pacific Ocean has a variety of conditions
depending on the weather. On a typical day the local thermal
starts to crank up around 12:30 PM, and usually peaks from 1 to
6 PM. Wind velocity averages from 13 - 28 m.p.h. with an average
around 18 m.p.h., so most locals use sails from 5.0 to 6.5
depending on the size of board to be used and individual body
weight.
|
Your basic Cabrillo session is bump and jump and/or
slalom oriented, with wave conditions whenever a south
or southwest swell comes up.
|
Kiteboarding at Cabrillo
Kiteboarding at Cabrillo Beach is for
advanced kiters only. Advanced kiters beware of the shifty,
gusty wind that predominates on and close to the beach. The wind
shifts from Southwest to Northwest frequently on and close to
the sand, with gusts from 5 to 30 knots.
Big shorebreak on certain days can make landing your kite
difficult.
The further downwind you launch, the steadier the wind gets, but
the closer you get to the big rock jetty.
If you manage to successfully make it onto open water, the most
consistent wind is upwind of the launch, right off Pt. Fermin
and the large kelp bed.
We recommend Belmont Shore for beginners and intermediates, and
Rat Beach (off Torrance Beach) for intermediate and advanced
kiters. Cabrillo is for advanced only, unless you enjoy being
washed up on the jetty. Other Los Angeles kite launching sites

Dates for 2006-2007 Season Specials: Nov. 19 - 26
& Dec. 21 - Jan. 2) |
| La Ventana is one of
the most consistently windy places you'll find
anywhere in the world during its windy season.
Starting in November (and sometimes in mid-October)
and ending in late April, the conditions at La Ventana
are ideal for both kiteboarding and windsurfing.
The fishing is pretty good too, although it's really
outstanding in late spring and summer when the wind
isn't blowing. |
|
Check
out the map and it will help you understand why it's
so consistently windy at La Ventana. The dark
areas on land represent the mountains that funnel the
wind off the Sea of Cortez into LaVentana Bay, the white
area south of Captain Kirk's is a big, hot valley.
The combination of local thermal wind, the frequent
"El Norte" wind, and the venturi effect from
the surrounding mountains make La Ventana a good bet for
November through April winds.
Captain Kirk's founded
La Ventana's first resort and windsport school in 1993,
and is perfectly located 1/4 mile north of the
public campground. With La Ventana's increasing
popularity it now boasts 5 resorts and numerous
restautants, and is becoming a major destination for
wind junkies worldwide. "Above the
Crowd"
is our new slogan and we quite literally are: 1/4
mile upwind of the crowds, where there is plenty of
room,
the wind is clean, and the feel is low key,
comfortable, and authentic Baja.
|
|
At La Ventana we
are located on a superb property that retains its
natural pre-development beauty, while providing
amenities that only thoughtful development can bring.
Immense Cardon Cacti (the "King of Cactus")
tower about the site, interspersed with elephant trees
and scores of other desert plants. Bird lovers will be
especially surprised that Captain Kirk's could be a
destination resort for the Audubon Society, sporting a
full complement of both land and seabirds.
Captain Kirk's Resort is designed so
you can have it your way. Lodging is spread out
over a large area so each guest gets a feeling of space
and privacy, as well as a spectacular view of La Ventana
Bay.Hang out in your own space, or join other guests at
the Clubhouse Casita, the Captain's Deck, and of course
the beach!
